What actually makes a wool trouser worth buying

The difference between a trouser that holds its shape and one that doesn't is mostly in the fabric and the cut

A wool trouser is one of the most useful things in a working wardrobe. It's warm enough for autumn and winter, smart enough for most professional contexts, and. If the fabric is right. Comfortable enough to wear for a full day without thinking about it. The gap between a good one and a mediocre one is mostly in the fabric and the cut.

Fabric weight and weave

Wool trousers come in a range of weights, typically measured in grams per linear metre (g/m). A lightweight suiting wool at around 200g/m will drape beautifully but won't hold a crease through a long day. A heavier wool crepe at 300g/m or above will hold its shape better and wear more durably, at the cost of some drape.

Crepe weaves are particularly good for trousers because the slightly textured surface resists shine and holds a crease without pressing. A plain weave wool will look sharper initially but will develop a seat shine faster, especially if you're sitting at a desk for most of the day.

The waistband question

A fully elasticated waistband is comfortable but tends to bunch at the front, which disrupts the line of the trouser. A fully rigid waistband is clean at the front but can be uncomfortable over a long day. The middle option. Elasticated at the back only, with a flat front. Gives you most of the comfort benefit without the visual cost.

This is the construction we use on the wool crepe trousers we carry. The front stays flat, the back gives when you sit, and the overall silhouette reads as a proper trouser rather than a pull-on.

Fit and what to look for in the leg

The leg opening is where most trousers go wrong. A straight leg that's too wide reads as shapeless; one that's too narrow reads as fashion-forward in a way that dates quickly. A straight leg that falls from the hip to the ankle with about 18-20cm of opening at the hem is the most versatile cut for most body shapes.

Check also where the trouser sits at the waist. A high-waisted trouser will lengthen the leg visually; a mid-rise sits more casually. Neither is wrong, but it's worth knowing which you're buying.

If you're unsure about fit before buying, our fit notes on each product listing are written to answer exactly these questions. And Brigid can adjust the hem or waist once you've bought.
